Forest and Natural Resource Management major Lauren Thompson constantly found herself on the go. Deeply valuing her active lifestyle, Thompson spent long days studying in St. Paul, practicing rock climbing at the RecWell, and mixing salads at her part-time job. Despite her busy schedule, Thompson began experiencing wrist pain, making the things she loved very difficult. Her sister, also a Gopher, recommended ringing the Boynton hotline to make an appointment with Physical Therapy. She was relieved to learn there was no referral necessary, which was convenient for the preoccupied student.

Thompson arrived at Boynton Health’s Physical Therapy Clinic on the day of her appointment. She met with her doctor, and they constructed a plan to work with her lifestyle. The appointment consisted of ultrasound to loosen up the fluid and walk-through exercises to ease the pain. Thompson said the interaction was “personable, meaningful, and helpful.” Her doctor took notes and collaborated with unique ways to remember the exercises. He directed her on how to tape it comfortably and which to buy at the Boynton Health Pharmacy. After her appointment, she walked to the pharmacy and was pleasantly surprised at how seamless the experience had been.

When Thompson had her follow-up appointment two weeks later, she met with the same doctor, who added a few mobilities and strengthening tips into her repertoire. While reflecting on her experience, Thompson explained that her symptoms had returned this summer when rafting in the Smoky Mountains. She had done the exercises as practiced with helpful mnemonic devices and rapidly improved. Thompson looks back on the experience fondly and appreciates the accessibility and help of Boynton Health. Her expectations were greatly exceeded, and she has returned to utilize various services since then. She’s grateful to her experience at Boynton Health for helping her care for her body, mind, and spirit.

Busy schedules can render healthcare a low priority to many people these days. Even if something is wrong, treatment is often put off until the situation becomes dire.
