Let's Talk

Let’s Talk Drop-in Consultations

Informal drop-in consultations for students. There is no cost for Let’s Talk drop-in consultations. No appointment is needed. Let's Talk is not a substitute for psychotherapy or formal counseling and does not constitute mental health treatment. Let's Talk counselors provide informal consultations to help students with specific problems and to introduce them to what it's like to speak with a counselor. Your Let's Talk counselors can help you determine whether formal counseling would be useful for you and, if appropriate, assist you with getting connected to more formal counseling.

To Get Started

  1. Right before entering the Let's Talk consultation space, complete a brief Google form for your Let’s Talk counselor to review.
  2. Check out our Let’s Talk counselor calendar and find a time that works for you.
  3. Virtual: Once you've completed this form, click on the Zoom meeting link to enter the waiting room for your counselor. You will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
In-Person: Please grab a number and slide it under the door to let the counselor know someone is waiting for them. The counselor will be with you as soon as they become available. Consultations cannot start in the final 15 minutes before a session ends.

More Information

Substance Use/Abuse Care

Boynton Health offers students confidential alcohol and substance use services to satisfy personal, academic, and/or legal requirements. We support with referrals to needed services.

ADHD

Boynton has specific policies for the treatment of ADHD

  • If you are currently diagnosed and treated for ADHD, we must review your records.
  • If you were diagnosed after age 15, we require that your diagnostic workup include adequate neuropsychological testing (see our Frequently Asked Questions section).
  • If you have never been diagnosed, you must complete a full clinical workup, including an interview, neuropsychological testing, and possible lab tests.
  • If you are getting a stimulant prescription from Boynton, you will be asked to review and sign a medication agreement (Stimulant Agreement).
  • You may be asked to complete a urine drug screen.

What to do if you suspect you have undiagnosed ADHD

  • Make an appointment with Mental Health or Primary Care.
  • Make sure the scheduler knows that you have questions about ADHD. Your provider will discuss these issues and refer you for neuropsychological testing (if appropriate).
  • No medication will be prescribed until that testing is completed and reviewed.
Eating Disorders

Boynton Health provides confidential eating disorder assessments and referrals to treatment services.

Emotional Support Animals

In rare situations, your provider may consider writing a letter for an ESA. This may require a team consultation to determine the medical necessity of the animal and confirm that other avenues of treatment have first been tried and have not been successful.

Acquiring an animal with the assumption that your provider will then approve it as an ESA is an inappropriate use of our services at Boynton Mental Health & Counseling and may interfere with our ability to approve an ESA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can be seen at Boynton's Mental Health Clinic?

Boynton Mental Health and Counseling is open to University of Minnesota Twin Cities students who are:

  • Enrolled full time, and
  • Studying for a degree, and
  • Pay the Student Services Fee.
  • Or are Graduate Assistants who are enrolled in the Graduate Assistant Health Plan.

Some services, including short term, session-limited counseling, some group counseling sessions, affinity groups, workshops and Let's Talk drop-in counseling are available to University students that are not enrolled full-time and don't pay student service fee. All students must be physically located in the state of Minnesota.

Mental health services are not open to staff and faculty.

How much will my visit cost?

It depends on your health insurance and whether you pay the Student Services Fee.

A co-payment at the time of your visit may apply. Any remaining costs for your care may be billed to you at a later time. Amounts vary by insurance plan. Consult your insurance card, or contact your health insurance provider for details.

With some exceptions, students who pay the Student Services Fee receive most services at Boynton at reduced cost. See details about the Student Services Fee.

Why do I have to fill out a Release of Information?

Students requesting to be seen for psychiatric medications and who have been previously treated outside of Boynton Health will be asked to complete a health release of information form (ROI). An ROI is required for any previous medication provider, intensive outpatient provider, or psychiatric hospital stay. Students receiving care can contact their providers via the MyBoynton patient portal or call the clinic to schedule follow-up appointments.
