About the Program
Program Overview
The Master’s degree concentration level internship program provides a concentration level placement for students in their second year of UMN's Master’s of Social Work and Master’s of Counselor Education programs. It is typically 20 hours per week with no set clinical quota. Students build up their schedule according to their readiness and goals, typically working their way up to 6-10 clinical hours per week including individual therapy, group therapy, and mental health screenings.
Schedule
- We will work on accommodating your internship hours so that they work with your class schedules. Typically, running on Mondays, Tuesdays, and half-day Wednesdays
On Boarding
- Meet with our Program’s Coordinator to discuss policies procedures, clinic/program history, and receive comprehensive training in conducting intakes, documentation, and utilizing our electronic medical record
- Building tour to familiarize yourself with our facilities
- Meet with key stakeholders to learn about our services and form connections throughout the clinic
- Training includes mandated reporting, HIPAA, trauma-informed care, treatment planning, risk/safety planning, and more
Setting You Up for Success
- Observe a range of intake types with multiple providers
- Conduct supervised intakes

Hands-on Training
- Participants will be offering individual psychotherapy services to UMN students dealing with various diagnoses and stressors
- Opportunity to co-facilitate a group each semester
- One hour per week of individual supervision and one hour per week of group supervision
- Participate in case presentations and attend talks on clinical topics throughout the year
- Train with a member of the Mental Health Screening team, progressing to conducting your own mental health screenings
- Learn how to complete needs assessments, make referrals, learn about resources, and coordinate care in a full service college health center

What should I do if I get accepted?
Upon acceptance, our program's coordinator and HR team will contact you over the summer, and you will go through an onboarding process in late August. Detailed information will be provided about the start of your regular schedule during the first week of the school year.
